Basic research is one of the main activities, which fuels the very functioning of the Institute for Civilization and Culture. It represents the framework behind sustainable development: alongside these, the Institute develops its content in the long-term, improves infrastructural conditions, establishes lasting inter-institutional bonds and shapes the pool of its colleagues and researchers. Applied research is at the core of the activities carried out by the Institute, as well as one of the practical aims of its establishment. Research projects, analyses and smaller works of expertise, as well as a well-defined aim of the Institute ensure that it is a relevant partner in the identification of public interest and value.

ICK's research framework includes the training of young researchers. The development of staff is one of the main tasks the Institute prides itself upon, which is why many of the financial funds it obtains are used to stipend its own young researchers. Institute for Civilization and Culture is involved in the research program, Research into Cultural Formations, which it executes along with ISH - the Faculty for Postgraduate Study of Humanities.
